A Cup of Tea

There are over 20,000 different teas in the world.  Each of these varieties do not only carry a different taste and flavor, but different beneficial properties.  A variety of cultures around the world drink tea as an alternative to medicine because of its healing properties.  Having grown up amongst different cultures, here are a few of my favourites.

Masala Chai is a staple in most Indian homes.  Despite having been introduced by the British, tea has become a vital part of every Indian home.  Chai is a ritual; in the morning, as an afternoon pick-me-up, or as a digestive post-dinner.  This variety contains a medley of spices such as cardamom, ginger, black pepper, clove, cinnamon, fennel and star anise.  Besides being delectable, the combination of the spices is said to help lower blood sugar levels.

Ginger Lemon Honey Tea is an integral part of most Chinese households.   Especially with cooler weather, this particular blend helps ward off the effects of winter colds and can also be enjoyed as a delicious drink.  Honey has antibacterial properties and is used to fight infections.  Fresh ginger is said to be “hot,” and as such, is used to warm the stomach and counteract with the “cold” in the body.  Finally, adding lemon gives you an always welcome boost of Vitamin C.

Coca Leaf Tea has historically been controversial because of its association with its notorious cousin.  In fact, these leaves are still banned in a number of places around the world.  However, in its natural form as coca leaf tea, it is still used throughout for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to altitude sickness, pain, and stomach ailments.  It has a mild bitter taste to it, but the benefits outweigh this drawback.
