What "Raksha Bandhan" means
"Raksha Bandhan" comes from Sanskrit: raksha means protection, and bandhan means bond or tie — together, "bond of protection." According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, the festival celebrates the bond between sisters and brothers, with particular emphasis on the brother's role in protecting the sister. It's observed on the full moon day of Shravana in the Hindu calendar, which usually falls in August.
